I admit to digging this trend (I have a Fender Custom Shop Rory Gallagher Strat, which is about the most relic'ed guitar out there),but is anyone fooled anymore ?
I mean, this stuff is everywhere, and usually at twice the price of a pristine finished guitar or bass.
I see that Richie Sambora has a heavily reliced, doubleneck Tele.
I mean,c'mon, how would you ever get a doubleneck, which would be a guitar that, would only be used infrequently during a set ,get beat to death like it was used every and all night,in hot sweaty blues joints.
Answer is,it wouldn't.
I don't know. Is this trend saturating itself out of existence?
Seems like people are trying to buy "mojo".
Every time I've used my Gallagher Strat in public, the only people that asked me about it were other guitar players.
So who's foolin' who?

Have you checked out Fano gtrs? Their Jazzmaster model sounds pretty sweet and not bad for the price compared to a vintage Jazzmaster.

I'm pretty skeptical of the whole thing. To me, it's a bit like buying pre-ripped jeans. Why would I pay more to buy something that's already a little closer to the scrap heap?

Personally, if I was looking for something that showed signs of having been used heavily, I'd probably just buy an instrument that had actually been used heavily...

I admit that some of the replicas/relics look really cool (I'd probably sell everything I own for one of those Andy Summers models), but I wouldn't be caught playing one on stage. People would see right through it--I'm probably a little too young to be playing a guitar that looks like it was manufactured in the late 60's/early 70's...

Very cool.
Nevr played a JM.Never knew anyone that had one to try out,and you rarely see them in music stores around here (Detroit).
Hey,if they're good enough for Andy Partridge and Dave Gregory, they're good enough for me !

You also don't need an audience member making it a relic for you.
Years ago,we were playing in a club with no stage.
We played right on the dance floor.
An extremely drunken woman was on the dance floor with some dude that had to hold her up because she was so drunk.
We we're mildy amused watching her fall all over the place.
But, she got too close to us and fell right into the drum kit, which knocked over a cymbal stand, which in turn, fell into the other guitarists Gibson SG which was on a stand.
That cymbal "guillotined" the SG's neck.It didn't chop it off,but it took a HUGE chunk out of it.
He was extremely pissed.
It became an ugly scene.
Lot's of yelling, and the drunk woman burst into a pile of mewling tears.
He had a luthier repair it,and the cat did a good job.Unless you knew where it was,you couldn't find the repair.
Battle scars baby!
Hoo Wah...
